Vignette research in Southern Africa (VISA)
Vignette research in Southern Africa (VISA)
The Vignette research in Southern Africa (VISA) network is a collaborative, interdisciplinary research network for researchers, scholars, and practitioners dedicated to advancing social, educational, psychological, cultural, and economic understanding across the region - through seeking nuanced understandings of the phenomena shaping our world. The VISA network supports studies conducted in the Global South, with a view to support policy-makers in the global context across various sectors – health, education, social development, youth, business and civil society.
The Vignette research in Southern Africa (VISA) network aligns with the Innsbruck Vignette Research method (IVR) that was originally developed at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and which is being advanced in the VignA network of vignette and anecdotal researchers (University of Vienna).
Our vision
VISA approaches research from a belief that inquiry should be grounded in the unique contexts and lived experiences of the individuals and communities we study. Through the use of vignettes—short, descriptive narratives in diverse languages—we capture the multiplicity of voices and perspectives that underpin social change and sustainability.
Working closely with the VignA network, VISA provides a platform for researchers from Southern Africa to exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, participate in resonance readings and to disseminate findings that contribute to informed policy-making and evidence-based practice.
What we Do
Collaborative Research: We bring together scholars from different fields to engage in interdisciplinary research that highlights the complexities of social phenomena.
Capacity Building: Through workshops, vignette research training sessions, and mentorship, we support emerging researchers in developing their skills and methodologies in vignette research.
Knowledge Sharing: Our publications, symposia, and webinars provide opportunities to share insights and findings emanating from vignette research with academic and non-academic audiences alike.
Vignette research may be utilised as a singular research method, as well as a complimentary research tool for in-depth inquiries.
