Ethos in the teaching profession: Manual for practicing a professional attitude

The project "Ethos in the teaching profession" contributes to the professionalization of future teachers. The focus lies on the pedagogical ethos that needs to be developed among future teachers by implementing specific seminar units and reflection offerings in the teacher training program at three locations in Germany and Austria (Humboldt University Berlin, University Innsbruck and the University of Vienna). The project aimed at the development of a manual for use in university teacher training seminars. The manual contains suggestions for the reflection of concrete examples and practical problems, the practice of which is conducive to the training of professional teacher ethics.

The question of the ethos of prospective and existing teachers is central to initial, continuing and advanced training, but is hardly reflected in current competency models of teacher education. This project attempted to make prospective teachers more aware of the reflection of their own ethos as a domain-related developmental task, which lies at right angles to other professionalism domains of teachers. The starting point was the professionalization model of the EPIK domains, which has already been tested and implemented in teacher education contexts.
